Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>hardware (more info?)

One of my PC's is a 5 y/o HP desktop, specifically an HPa250n model,
that came with a 2.60GHz Intel P4 processor and (originally) 512MB DDR
SDRAM (2 x 256 DIMM in each of 2 x 184pin DDR slots). It is expandable
to 2GB.

There are 2 available slots for additional memory and my wife would
like to expand it to the 2GB. It came with 2 x PC3100 RAM strips but
I've been unable to find PC3100s locally. Everyone I check with tells
me they are no longer available (other than online from some memory
dealers) and that I ought to get PC3700s to total out the 2GB's.

Does this make sense, that is, replacing the original PC3100s with
3700s with a 2.60GHz processor? Would PC2700's be a "better" fit,
though slower? Does anyone have any other thoughts on what speed
memory strips I should consider other than the ones mentioned above?

BTW, she's running WinXP SP3 with no plans or desire for Vista.
