Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

After cleaning up a recent infestion by TDSS on my machine with help from
SpySweeper support, I now have intermittent problems with switching user
accounts in XP. Fast switching is enabled. SpySweeper support claims they
have no idea why this is happening.
We occasionally get an error dialogue that says 'windows cannot switch
accounts...' and suggests rebooting. After researching this problem on the
web, I came across a suggestion to run 'sfc /scannow'. I did, but nothing
changed. The problem is inconsistent. Sometimes you can switch from one
account to another, other times you can't. Or if three accounts are open,
you can switch to the second but not to the third.

Any advice on how to get this resolved?

I've never experienced your particular problem, but let me say something
generally: Malware can infiltrate your operating system so deeply that a
successful removal causes collateral damage. I'm not saying that's
obviously what happened to you, but it's possible. Be glad it's just an
annoyance.
