unreadable files - showing symbols

Hi. I sent some documents from my office computer to have at home with me.
the docs were not created in the new versions of word, excel or power point
so when i try and open at home they are a bunch of symbols on a couple of
lines. I have read some of the response on converting and compatibility and
nothing has worked. I appreciate anyone's help. thanks
