Post subject: sndvol32.exe (audio mixer) will not open
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

I recently updated my Realtek audio driver on my laptop.
After doing so, I am unable to open the mixer, and am getting a message
telling me to install the 'new hardware' via control panel - blah, blah,
blah...

Attempts at reverting the Realtek driver are unsuccessful - system says
an earlier driver is unavailable.

Attempts at reverting system recovery are unsuccessful.

How can I get the mixer to come back?

Thanks...

WinXP Pro SP2+
Duo-core/3.8GHz/4Gig RAM

Please provide the PCs Manufacturer/Make/Model to help us better help you.

Manufacturer - Dell, Emachine, HP, Gateway, etc.
Make - Dimension, Pavilion, etc.
Model/Series - 9200C, 7125, etc.

Example: Dell Demension 9100C, HP Pavilion 7125

If you were experiencing any issue(s) prior to updating the drivers,
please provide detailed information on what the issue(s) were and you have
already attempted to resolve the issue(s) prior to updating the drivers.

Did you downloaded the proper drivers for your specific make/model laptop
from the manufacturers support site and installing them per the
manufacturers instructions?
If yes, have you attempted to uninstall/install the device drivers instead
of only updating the?
If yes, have you attempted to install the drivers in either Device Manager
or via the "Hardware installation wizard" as was suggested?
If yes, please provide the steps you used for installing the drivers.

Does sndvol32.exe exist on your computer? Where?

Alienware Area-51m laptop
I was not experiencing any issues prior to updating the drivers.
I did download the proper driver for my make/model (and Realtek chip).
I have uninstalled/disabled, and reinstalled drivers several times.
I have uninstalled and installed older version of driver with no change.
I installed via device manager

A couple of things you might try:

- Uninstall the sound card from DM (Device Manager), then have DM scan
for hardware changes.
- Remove your NIC from DM, and restart. You might have to uninstall
both devices, then reboot. (Those two devices tend to conflict with
each other in some systems. Installing the NIC after the sound card
might assign the "proper" interrupt to the sound card.) On a laptop,
you can't necessarily get to the NIC to remove it physically, so
removing from DM is your only option.

Try using System Restore to revert to a date before the changes were made.

I have already done this during the reversion stage of trying to get
this to come back.
I did not yet try disabling or removing the NIC. I will try this next
(they are both Realtek).

Thanks

Click Start > Run, type in: services.msc and press Enter or click Ok.
Scroll down to Windows Audio.
Startup Type should be Automatic and the service should be started.

If one or both are not as stated above double click on Windows Audio to open
Windows Audio Properties.
Change the Startup Type to Automatic if not already selected.
Click Start if the Services Status is not started.
