In WinExplorer each file extension has an tiny. little icon associated with it (e.g. all *.html files
the little blue "e" for the Internet Explorer).

How can I get/extract such a little icon as a stand-alone image?

You want what's called a "Resource Editor". I imagine you can find a free
one via Goggle but it usually and I assume still does come with what's
called a "compiler', e.g. a tool a programmer uses to change source code
into machine readable form (program). This type of editior will let you
examine all the resources included in the file (exe, dll, or whatever),
change them, extract them etc.

Another way would be to press PrtScreen key on keyboard to capture image of
the current display to the clipboard. Paste that into a new image in your
favorite image editing program and crop everything except the icon. Save the
result.

Google for 'Icon extractor' -there's tons of freeware apps that can
extract and save icons from DLL/EXE files. The icon you want is embedded
in IEXPLORE.EXE or SHELL32.DLL.

I haven't allowed it to but Picasa will catalogue all the images on your
computer if you allow it to.
You will also find loads of graphics in the temp internet files.

Cindy

How many times on different days are you going to post this to so many different
groups. You already have had answers which were exactly and correctly posted to you
on your previous posting junket. Check the answers in the other newsgroups

Get IcoFx - free icon editor, Google for source.

Open IcoFx

Open Windows Explorer

Navigate to C:\Windows\IE7 (or the folder for whatever version you
have), You may need to select "Show Hidden Files" in WE Tools | View.

Drag IExplore.exe from Windows Explorer to IcoFx & drop.

Select the appropriate image - the big icon is usually the first &
already selected.

Click on Extract

Modify & save to a file.

You can get the embedded icon from any file in this way.

That's a darn good question but she won't see it because I'm sure she
only reads help and support. And you only replied to us. I restored
the other group.

Someone wrote me that in help and support too, she is rude. She never
replies to any of the people who try to help her, she certainly never
thanks them or tells them if their suggestions worked, and of course
she is just as bad with people from XP general. Worse really, since
she has it set up so we don't even see answers from people in our
group or the other group.

Given her continuing rudeness, why should anyone bother to reply to
Cindy Parker?

Get rid of the follow-up line, Ms. Parker, and I'll ignore your
rudeness in never thanking anyone or even telling them whether their
suggestions work or not.

Thanks for the head's up MM.

Still: until this, I wasn't even aware that one could redirect replies to
one group while posting on several, so I still learned something: and her
question reminded me of other things about my system that I might have
forgotten. Even threads that develop into 'flames' can provide snippets of
useful info. I think I've probably learned most of what I know about my
computers and their software from these groups; and just as much from
reading responses to other's questions as to my own. So many thanks to all
the amazingly helpful people out there in news group land, and may Ms Parker
be overrun with icons. (I can't even work out how to get the 'W' back on my
Wikipedia link, since I started using Firefox - but life's too short to try
and find it!)

Cheers,
S

You can use ResourceHacker (freeware) to extract icons from most programs.

And then use an image editor like IrfanView (freeware) to convert and/or
resize the image.
