I have XP 2002, SP2. Device Manager is blank. No list is there. I've tried
everything that I know of, which isn't too much. Clicking in the blank area,
show hidden devices. Didn't work. Followed the instructions in Article ID:
311504. Didn't work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

hang on and see if someone else has a decent fix...

if not, it may need a repair install

There are a few ideas here. The winning fix, was deleting ENUM.

Thanks, Paul. That fixed it. Now I have a new problem. No sound! I go to
Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and it says that there's
no sound device. I unistalled and reinstalled Soundblaster software and that
didn't help. Any suggestions?

Is there a Soundblaster entry under "Sound, video and game controllers"
in Device Manager ?

I have a PCI sound card, and under "Sound, video and game controllers", there is a
specific entry for my sound card. If I check the drivers tab on that, I can see
the usual mix of manufacturer and Windows drivers for sound listed in the driver tab.

cmaudio.dat
cmijack.dat
cmuninst.dat \__ Uninstaller
cmuninst.exe /
mixer.exe <---- card specific mixer panel (a startup item)
system\crlds3d.dll
system32\a3d.dll
system32\Audio3D.dll
system32\cmnprop.dll
system32\drivers\cmaudio.sys
system32\drivers\drmk.sys
system32\drivers\ks.sys
system32\drivers\portcls.sys
system32\drivers\stream.sys
system32\ksproxy.ax
system32\ksuser.dll
system32\wdmaud.drv

If I go Start:Run and execute "dxdiag", it says the
driver for the Sound is "cmaudio.sys". My hardware
sound acceleration level setting in the Dxdiag Sound
tab is "Full Acceleration".

So that is what I can see here, on a working sound system.

You might also check in C:\WINDOWS\setupapi.log and check
for log entries related to your sound. For some reason,
installs are in two sections, the first section looks like
the files are discovered, and the second is the actual
install or something. I don't understand why they work that
way, but they seem to be in pairs. You can see the date
stamps are very close together in this case.

Yes, there's a Soundblaster entry in Device Manager.

I ran dxdiag and there are 2 tabs for Sound, Sound 1 and Sound 2. Neither
of them have a driver listed.

Setupapi.log revealed nothing for me.

I tried this in IE, and it brings up a Help & Support troubleshooter.

hcp://help/tshoot/tssound.htm

To save you the trouble, they look for a signed driver in Device Manager,
but that is the extent of what they check. As far as the troubleshooter
is concerned, if the driver is installed and there is no yellow exclamation,
it should be working.

Something must control whether the sound driver is registered
in the Sound control panel. I could find a reference to the
"cmnprop.dll" file for my sound card in Regedit, but that
is all that popped out at me. Your file would have a different
name as it is a Soundblaster.

I had a problem once before with the Mixer for my sound card,
but that didn't completely bust sound for me. It just
prevented the custom mixer from appearing, and only
the generic Windows volume control thing was available.

I can see entries for sound under this registry key. Is it
possible that somehow, your sound card got installed twice ?
Under this key, I can find my PCI sound card, and I can also
find the webcam microphone, which is not currently plugged in.
So you may find a lot of cruft under this key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081005215705AADvclH

I still don't know how the driver is registered, so that the rest
of Windows knows about it. Perhaps looking at the INF file from
the installer, hints at it.
