Post subject: XP start up doesn't work, stops at empty screen, after Welcome
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>general (more info?)

I suddently can't start XP.

I am on the same computer but running win98 now and I would look at
the events that the event-viewer displays but I can't guess what the
file name would be.

I didn't install anything or change anything except that yesterday I
did install in Firefox3 an add-on called Stylish recommended by a
smart guy in the netcape.public.mozilla.broswer newsgroup, with one
script that makes visited links display in red in Firefox/Google. I
had that installed for hours yesterday, then hibernated, and started
up today and again ran with it installed for hours.

(But it's not trying to start out of hibernation now afaict, and I'm
not starting Firefox.)

Today I was out of the room and I came back and it looked like XP
restarted, but only got as far as the blank (blue in my case) screen
after the Welcome to XP screen.

The screen that would have icons and a task bar in a few seconds if it
were working.

Trying to Start with last Working Configuration gave the same results.

Trying to start in debugging mode gave the same results with no
indication of why it is called debugging mode. (OH, I see now it uses
another computer and a serial cable. Oh well.)

Trying to Start in Safe Mode yielded the question, roughtly: Do you
want to Restore? When I said No, I got a blank black screeen with
"Safe Mode in all four corners and a file name in something on the top
line.
When I said Yes, I got a mesage that: Restore cannot
protect my computer.

Trying to start with the Directory Service Restore Mode gave the same
result as a nomral start iirc. I don't know if I have Windows-based
domain controllers or not.

With one method of starting, it displays a list of files started and
the last one shown relates to "Loaded driver amdagp.sys", which is
also in the boot log and is the last succesful load before all the
"Did not load driver" lines. Although I learned in win98, it could
do a lot of things without displaying anything

I can't find anything equivalent to win98 step-by-step booting. I
miss that.

Here is the start of the ntbtlog.txt, 24 successful lines, followed by
hundreds of "Did not load driver" lines with occasional lines
interspersed like:
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\rdbss.sys
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\mrxsmb.sys

--start log--
Service Pack 3 5 25 2009 19:15:54.500

Did not load driver Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)
PC
Did not load driver Audio Codecs
Did not load driver Legacy Audio Drivers
Did not load driver Media Control Devices
Did not load driver Legacy Video Capture Devices
,,,,

In the middle a few lines like
.....
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\rdbss.sys
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\mrxsmb.sys
.....
amongst hundreds of other "Did not load driver" lines.

And finally, the final lines of the log are:
.....
Loaded driver Fastfat.SYS
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Cdfs.SYS
Did not load driver Processor
Did not load driver ECP Printer Port
Did not load driver Communications Port
Did not load driver Communications Port

Did not load driver Video Codecs
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\ndisuio.sys
--end log--

Thanks a lot for any help you can give.

Check below on doing a Repair Install. You will need a WinXP CD.

FWIW, I found the names of the events files and looked in all of them,
and then noticed the dates, all days before I had any trouble.

Well, it certainly sounds like you installed and changed a couple of things,
doesn't it?
