XP Logo appears then system seems to hang

Once the XP Logo appears and XP looks likes it is booting up it then just
goes to a black screen with blue horizontal stripes. I tried all of the safe
mode options but it just seems to hang. I tried using the repair feature in
my Windows install CD - once I get passed the password logon I get to the C:
promt - when I try to access any directories it tells me Access is denied - I
can't do a complete re-nstall as I I have been told that it will wip out all
of my .pst files and documents and other office files.

Do I have any options?

Temporarily mount the drive to a working PC and copy all the needed files to
that hard drive. Then try any corrective measures that are suggested here
or go ahead and format the drive and install a clean load of XP.
