| Hi,
I have WU set to download and inform, sometimes I fail to install them
there and then. When I come back it's forgotten the updates, at least
the shield has gone from the sysbar. How do I get to install the
downloaded updates without the shield?

Shutdown your PC, you'll be offered to "Install updates and shutdown".

[crosspost to Windows Update newsgroup]
Be patient and wait for AU shield to appear again.
With any of the Automatic Updates options selected, you will only see AU's
yellow "Updates are ready to be installed" icon when all of the approved
updates have downloaded or installed *and* when the update server can handle
the process.
If some but not all of the approved updates have downloaded, you may
encounter a "Click to install important updates and then shut down" button
when you go to turn off your computer. Doing so will install the
already-downloaded updates (see Event Log | System section).

Absent any serious numerical Errors in your windowsupdate.log (cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093), you may see a delay (i.e., in

on the servers ("Update is not allowed to download due to regulation").

In most cases, you can install all of the desired updates manually via
Windows/Microsoft Update website (WinXP) or by running Windows Update
manually (Vista) instead: Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all
other Automatic Updates users further back in the queue...which may explain,
at least in part, why Automatic Updates may not have brought them in for you
yet.
NB: Some months, it can take up to a week for every computer in the world to
be able to download/install updates. >> Stay informed about: Windows Automaigic updates |

But PA they're downloaded already, I just neglected/missed to install
them at the time. All I want to do is review which ones I want to
install and do it.
It seems to make the 'download and inform me' option a bit of a waste if
I cannot get to install them at a convenient time! >> Stay informed about: Windows Automaigic updates |

Again, be patient and the AU icon will show up again. I know because the
same thing happened to me: According Event Viewer, AU notified at 5:25 PM
yesterday but I wasn't home. Lo and behold, the AU icon popped-up again
today at the same time and I was able to install the updates.
If you're impatient, you can always go to Windows Update website and select
the CUSTOM scan option. After selecting/approving the updates, chances are
the AU icon will automagically appear. If that happens, continue installing
the update via the website! >> Stay informed about: Windows Automaigic updates |

It makes no sense to download updates you don't want to install.
You should use the option
"Notify me before downloading any updates and notify me again when they
are ready to be installed."
Before downloading you can then decide what to download for install.

Thanks John,
that's the first sensible suggestion I've had on the subject.
I will try it.
Let me expand my question a little to see if here's a better way of
acheiving what I want.
If I run WU automatic, on bootup it scans my whole file system looking
for candidates to update, then downloads the relevent updates and
installs them, this is very laudable but very time consuming and coming
as it does at boot, I can do BA untill it finishes, distinctly
frustrating because in general I turned the !!!! computer on for me to
do something! If I leave the computer on 24/7 I can set it to do this at
say 3 in the morning when I'm likely to be doing something else. Setting
WU to 'semi-automatic' does not improve this situation, merely resulting
in the exact same scenario except the updates don't actually get
applied. And for some unknown reason the shield sometimes disappears so
I loose the indication that there are updates ready and awaiting
installation. The only guaranteed update philosophy is manual, which
means sitting watching while it goes through the whole darn process
lamentably slowly before your very eyes.
How do I set it to check for updates when the machine is idle?
MU is generally worse because it checks for anything remotely Microsoft,
no just Windows. >> Stay informed about: Windows Automaigic updates |

I'm beginning to feel there is no sense in using AU at all. The avaiable
options either do not work reliably or meet my needs!
Unfortunately the manual method is worse because as PA pointed out
everybody and his brother is attempting to use it, clogging it up and
slowing it down to beyond watching paint dry. >> Stay informed about: Windows Automaigic updates |
