First off let me say that I'm in a very rural area that only has dialup
so getting an update of this size took me about 17 hours.

I got the SP2 using the Updates and yet when I try to install it
I get to "3 of 3" and gets to 100% but then stops there for a couple
minutes and then gives me a message of:

Service Pack Did Not Install. Reverting Changes

I'm currently running Vista Home Basic with SP1.

I have read a few reports that some A/V programs cause problems with the
SP2 install. Notably, NOD32 is one of the issues...but I turned both my
Anti-virus and my anti-spyware off to install the pack, and had no
problems. Others have reported a few driver issues that were resolved by
checking updates again after the installation of SP2. I don't know what
programs you are running, but most issues appear to have a resolution and
the consensus of opinion of SP2 seems to be a very positive one...with
one exception,HTPC systems. I have loaded SP2 on 3 systems plus my
HTPC...all went exceptionally well except for the HTPC,which I restored
to original ,as SP2 wiped out two of the four tuners...I could have gone
throught the rigmarole of setting up all tuners and modding the registry
again, but decided it was easier ATM to stick to the original
setup.:geek:

I had the same problem initially with a file from an "unauthorized" web
site (lessen here for everyone).

When I got it from Microsoft I had no such problem. I also used the
Microsoft File Transfer Manager which checks the download for competency
when the download has completed.

Sadly some of your SP2 download may be corrupted but problems with SP2
itself cannot be excluded.
If you get to stage 3 the problem is not likely due to anything running on
your computer.
SP2 is a typical Microsoft product: works for many/most users but not all
and does not work as advertised for many if not most users. Nothing new in
any of that.
On a new dual core laptop with all the bells and whistles I had no problem
installing but had great difficulty with Blue Tooth (supposedly "improved"
in SP2), even slower than usual disc performance and problems with shutting
down the unit. Several reboots and retries got Bluetooth working and the
unit seems to shut down. Performance still seems slower.
SP2 is not a must have at this point.

For large downloads like that I recommend you install a download manager
program and redownload the SP2 installer from Microsoft Downloads. The
download manager is more or less a set and forget solution that can take
care of restarting interrupted file transfers and verify that the got
file is uncorrupted. The got file can be burned to CD in case it is
needed again in future.

Delete C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Run SFC /SCANNOW

If it saids it couldn't fix some problems, then...

Copy CBS.log and open CBS - Copy.log

Look for "Beginning Verify and Repair" and copy/paste from there to end of
the file.
