In Windows XP iin Customize Notifications for the Task Manager, The Windows
task manager is displayed in 'Past Items'.

How do I get it into 'Current Items'?

Task Manager should show up in the Current Items list when it is opened. It
will go to the Past Items list when you close Task Manager.

Is Task Manager itself behaving normally? Perhaps if you outlined exactly
what issue you're having with Task Manager you'll get a better response.

Good luck

When the Task Manager is open (even if minimized), I should get an 'icon' in
the Notification area of the taskbar. The Icon would be a graph displaying
approximate CPU usage. It's not there.

The item shows up in the Past item area. It needs to be in the current
items area to display in the Notification area.

Shell

Right click on the Start button and select Properties, Taskbar,
Customise. Place the cursor on Place the cursor on the item and there is
a scroll bar so that each item may be either Always Show. Always Hide or
Hide when in Inactive. Select Always Show and after restarting the
computer I suspect it will achieve what you want.

Check what theme is running on your system through Control Panel ->
Display -> Themes. Is it set to Classic? If so, change to the Windows XP
theme and see if the Task Manager icon shows up in the notification area.

Also, are you using any third party program that configure the appearance of
Windows?

The only other action I can think to take would be to clean up the current
and past items list.

Line 53, left hand column, Remove Past Items from Notification Area

Restart your computer and Windows will recreate the list.

Good luck

I am not permitted to use vbs files at work.

I tried all the other suggestions, but they did not work.

Can you edit the registry on your work computer? The following procedure
will manually clean up the current and past items lists.

Go to Start -> Run and enter regedit.exe in the Open box.
In the Registry editor, navigate to this registry key,

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

In the right hand pane, right click on "IconStreams" and select Delete from
the menu. Do the same for "PastIconsStream"

Log off from your account and log back on. Check "Customize Notifications".
The only entries should be the current items
displayed in the Notification area.

Good luck
