Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>installation_setup (more info?)

Hi,

This is my first post here but as I'm just about to start delving into
Vista I doubt it will be my last (by any means!)

I have a moderately old m/b, a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra-939, which has an
on-board Sil3x12 RAID controller running 2 discs in RAID 0. Previously I
was booting XP on this array and I wish to wipe XP and start again with
a clean install of Vista 32-bit. I will confess that I am wholly
unconfident when it comes to RAID installations as I don't know what I'm
doing - think I was just lucky when I set up XP!

Can anyone tell me whether the original pre-boot driver that I used for
XP will function with Vista or does Vista require a new one? Does Vista
then incorporate this driver into its installation or will I then need
to find another driver to run Vista?

I've looked at finding the latest drivers. Gigabyte's site appears
useless as the driver section for my m/b makes no mention of Vista
drivers anywhere. Silicon Image has BASE drivers and RAID drivers -
what's the difference? Only the BASE drivers mention compatibility with
Vista. Does anyone have any idea which one I will need?

Basically I'm all confused as I'm asking for help with getting some
clarity.

Many thanks

JT

Generally, a Vista installation will recognise the sata controller and
install without the need for doing the F6 option to install third party
drivers, early in the process. If drivers are required they can be installed
from memory stick, Unlike floppy in prevous versions of win.
*However* there are no Vista drivers listed for this mobo, so whether the
winxp drivers will work is unknown

You should run the Vista upgrade advisor

SiI3x12 32-bit Windows SATARAID Driver 3/14/2007 1.0.60.0
159 kb
The readme.txt inside of the archive mentions Vista.

Hi

Between working all the hours available and nursing sick children I
finally got around to updating to this driver and it works perfectly!
I'd initially installed using the XP driver but while working it was
pretty flakey and caused BSODs every 20mins or so but not so now.

Thanks for the advice Andy.

Can I ask another question? Windows Update is offering another updated
Sil3512 driver but I've read elsewhere on here about a Windows Update
offering an Sil3512 driver that caused the need for Vista to be
reactivated.

Does anyone know whether this driver is ok?

Cheers!

JT

The SiI3512 is an improved version of the SiI3212. It comes in a
physically smaller package and complies with the most recent version
of the PCI specs. In general, you should avoid installing hardware
drivers from Windows update, because you're not sure exactly what
you're getting.

The best source of HBA drivers should be the OEM itself. Check Silicone
Image's web page
(http://www.siimage.com/support/searchresults.aspx?pid=29&cat=3&os=10) for
the latest, which looks like it was released in June of 2007.

Thanks everyone.

It's working so I'll stick with what I've got and hide the update so
that I'm not tempted again!
