in explorer I try to search for a file- it returns nothing. I go to advanced
search and check "include non-indexed files..." and it gets the file I need.
I have reindexed the drive and checked to ensure both the directory and file
types are included and are valid but explorer continues to treat them as
"unindexed" help???

Hi Russ,

I did that (three times now - just to be sure!) The problem remains.
Anything else you can think of? Thanks Andy

Well, either the "third time is a charm", as Russ said, or our first
look was too soon. Indexing takes a while. It is one of the few finite
things that seems to be infinite Smile

Obviously I meant "your" first look. I haven't yet convinced the spell
checker to read my mind...

My experience is that Windows Search is considerably slower than Agent
Ransack, which is what I use most of the time. But Windows Search isn't
as bad as "between Frankenstein and an abortion."

for months, i gave vista builtin search occasional chance to find files. Very rarely
could it find anything in the same folder (not a subfolder).
(eg) searchphrase ile
found nothing when various files in immediate folder were named with only
alphanumeric characters:
filename.txt
file2.doc
file4.url

then i tried wildcards, and discovered adding asterisk character at beginning of
searchword usually finds all files, though occasionally still leaves a few sure-
matches un"found".
eg
searchword *ile usually (but only usually) finds all that it should
filename.txt
file2.doc
file4.url

if you then open the advanced search options, and click the same search, you will
see advanced syntax generated in original searchbox.
unfortunately, the syntax is overly verbose for me.

3rd party findware:
"Everything" works very quickly, but does nothing when trying a search over the
lan. it shows the unc path, and lets you type characters, but doesn't visually
respond.
recently i also noticed everything inconsistently finds or doesn't find folders it
should find. it seems to always find files.
it also lacks contents-find feature.

so far, agent ransack (regex mode very effective) most reliably finds correctly.
ransack is free version of fileLocatorpro, so has some quirky cripples. but still very
usable. i use ransack more often than i use windows/explorer search on winxp.
(though that explorer filefind is still best for massive file reorganization searches,
IMO/IME)

I haven't tried locate32 much yet. i've downloaded some filefinds, but haven't tried.

years ago, i tried copernicus, but it seemed horribly bloated.

I do OK with Windows Search sometimes - but only sometimes Smile

I did not like Agent Ransack at all. I use another free program, Super
Finder XT, from http://fsl.sytes.net/
