Hi,

I've been trying to set up a remote desktop connection between my
laptop and my desktop both running on Vista Home Premium. Why does this
erro come up: -"This computer can't connect to the remote computer." -,
when they are both connected (wirelessly) via the same network.

Thanks

Can Home Premium do RDP? Not sure but if you can't get it working
reliably there are advantages in using TightVnc instead, for example it
does not care at all what operating system is in use and you do not
disconnect the user's session... they and you can both manipulate the
mouse etc.

Vista Home Premium does not have Remote Desktop.

For the home market, Microsoft offers Windows Home Server. See
http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/whs_pp1.asp.

You can get a free evaluation for 120 days. It costs $99.

Vista Home Basic and Premium doesnt have Remote Desktop they only have

The Home versions do have Remote Desktop client, but not the server. So
you can go "from" Home "to" other RD servers.

Hi again,

firstly I'd like to thank you all for the feedback. Very helpful!

Secondly, can anyone explain to me what the difference is between
Remote Assistance, Remote Desktop (Client) and Remote Desktop (Server).
..?

Btw... isn't Remote Desktop Connection : (the program~attached)
..that? 'Cos to be honest, I still don't understand how several people
are saying Home Premium don't have Remote Desktop Connection, when it is
installed as a program.

Remote Desktop consists or 2 parts, a "Client" and a "Server". All
machines have the "Client" part but for whatever reason Microsoft
decided that the "Home" versions don't get the server, so simply put
your machines have the ability to "Talk" to others but neither has the
ability to "Listen" for connections. As far as I know there is no way to
install the Microsoft RDP server on your machines and there's really no
point in going to a lot of trouble trying when the free VNC programs
work just as well if not better.

No, the server has to be listening for a connection to come in.
You can also look at LogMeIn and other services like that.

Well I use TightVNC a lot and you simply tell it during install that it
should run as a "Service", that way it is always listening. You should
have your router block internet access to the port it listens on unless
you want to use it away from home.

Hi,

I understand now that for any VNC program to work, it must be installed
on both the server and the other desktop/notebook. I have downloaded and
used many programs, and found that TeamViewer4 suited me the most.

Thanks for all help!
