Post subject: Registry entries
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)
Why do I have duplicate entries in the registry? I have 2 control set options
under HKEY Local Machine/system/controlset1 and Hkey local
machine/system/controlset2. They both contain the same info for whatever apps
they control.

Hi Tom,
Why you are there in the first place?
The ControlSet, which can be ControlSet, ControlSet01,ControlSet02 and
ControlSet03. These contin the Boot Info needed for the Operating system
which will be read from the registry on Boot up to decide which Boot devices
and what mode the Operating system will start up in!
Say, we have a group of Students and we would like to divided them into
Groups..like Group1, Group2, Group3..we can't say Group1,2,3 because they
will be in same group or level, so we divided them into groups to make it
easier for us to choose which group we want to teach or label for some sort
of activities in the school for Ex.

If you need help with something let us know before you delete any Keys or
subkey in the registry.

developers engineered it
to be.

instead of wondering why

They are not duplicates, one is controlset1, the other is controlset2

A simple Google search (which you can do yourself) found this

Ever had to reboot to get at the boot menu and then select "Use last
known good configuration"? Well, how would that last known good
configuration be known if it weren't stored somewhere?

anywhere

One of the ControlSets (ControlSet001 or ControlSet002) will be a
duplicate (exact copy) of the CurrentControlSet. There can be more than
two ControlSets. I have seen systems where there were up to 6
ControlSets.

If ControlSet001 is set as the CurrentControlSet then more than likely
ControlSet002 will be used for Last Known Good Configuration. If your
computer fails to boot, Windows should offer you to use the "Last Known
Good Configuration" to enable you to successfully boot your computer.

You can find what ControlSetXXX is being used as the CurrentControlSet
by looking at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Select

Within this key, you can clearly see what ControlSet is the
CurrentControlSet, what ControlSet last failed to boot the computer and
the last successful ControlSet to boot your computer (LastKnownGood).

ControlSets will contain information for Services such as is the
Service is disabled or enabled, Hardware Profiles, and Driver
information.
