Post subject: PowerPoint 2007 can't open PPT file from app installation folder
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>powerpoint (more info?)

I have an application that launches PowerPoint 2007 and opens a PPT file in
slideshow mode. If the file is in the installation folder (C:\Program
Files\MyApp Folder\Presentations\), I get this error:

The presentation cannot be opened. Your antivirus program may prevent you
from opening the presentation. To fix this problem, make sure your antivirus
program is current and working correctly. If the problem persists and the
presentation is from someone that you trust, turn off your antivirus program,
and then try to open the presentation again. If you do this, make sure you
turn on your antivirus program again after you open the presentation.

If I change the location of the file to be opened (let's say
C:\Presentations\), the app (and slideshow) works fine.

Can anyone help me resolve this problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The operating system (unknown version) is apparently attempting to protect
the program's files from being opened and modified. Even if you could open
from this location it is a really bad practice to get into. Data files of
whatever type should always be located in their separate directory away from
program files. The program installation folder should never be used to store
an actual presentation's data file.

What LVTravel said. And to tack on a bit more info ...

Under Win XP, I suspect this would happen when you're running under a log-in
with limited privileges. Under Vista/Win7, your app won't be permitted to write
to anything in the \Program Files folder or below and may not have execute
privileges either.

I see.
Thanks for your replies.

The OS is Vista/Windows 7.

I have an installer for the application and the installer provides for
sample presentations to be written in a folder within the application
installation folder.

What would be the best practice for including sample files for an installed
application?

Because of the security limitations imposed with those operating systems,
you would be better served to create a separate folder off of the root
directory and place your sample files there. I am sure that there is a work
around to enable you to do what you desire but most of the applications that
have separate demo or instructional features (as I think that is what you
are attempting to produce with the PPT file) now put the data files into a
separate folder outside of the the Program Files folder.

Just on this one system I have the following data file folders: DeLorme
Docs, Epson, DVDnextCopy, MSOCache, Nvidia, Okidata, SmartSoundSoftware
which were all created by installed programs or printers where they access
their drivers or information files by default to eliminate the issue that
you are having.
