Hi danjohn--

This should fix you. Since you have the Vista disk, boot from it>click
repair in the lower left corner as I think you were describing, and do these
3 boot rec commands that take all of a few seconds just to be safe:

bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /rebuildbcd

This should restore your hidden bootloader and your bcd if damaged. It
shouldn't have happened as far as I know theoretically, but it has happened
to me. Please let us know how you make out with these. They should get
back your other boot, and it will show on the boot menu as recovered, but
will not be required to attend any 12-step meetings.

I meant to say in my post that

1) I don't think simply doing the startup repair selection on the Startup
Repair menu will fix this, but it might and if it doesn't you will need to
run the bootrec switches. I have seen Startup Repair fix a lot of
situations, including systemic problems with the components of Win 7 and
Vista, but not this usually. If it does great.

2) I think you're going to need to select "command prompt" on the Startup
Repair menu and run the bootrec switches to get your missing boot listed
again on your boot menu at start as "recovered."

Hmmm, I had to use the windows 7 dvd to repair bootloader.,
When i did bootrecrebuildbcd from vista dvd it showed me that there was
no operating systems!

Now when win7 boot it displays the VISTA green loading bar down the
bottom instead of the windows7 satus .
Still boots into win7

Doing a repair install with Windows 7 should fix that up for you. This
tutorial will help show you how to if needed.

The best program for managing boot configurations is vistabootpro! Its
even compatible with Windows 7! You can write any bootloader you want
with it : XP, Vista, 7

Its not free though!

BTW: I was not able to create/restore the bootloader using windows
repair either! It just not detects the damaged OS entry!

Precisely what did you do to restore it?

To fix the bootloader, you should have opted for the command prompt from the
Startup Repair menu and run 3 bootrec switches as I've posted above.

That bar tells you the kernel is loading. Obviously if the Vista bootloader
is in play, it's similar enough to Win7's to load it. I imagine that you
can fix Win 7's software no boots by deploying Startup Repair or the boot
rec switches from either the Vista DVD, or the Win 7 DVD, but I should have
specified the Win 7 DVD.

I also believe using this link would successfully make a repair disc to
repair either Vista or Win 7 using the modalities at Startup Repair
including Startup Repair, boot rec switches, or system restore if a restore
point were available.

Maybe this can help!
Run the -Vista recovery console- from you Vista DVD! Go to boot folder!
For example:

e:
cd boot

where e - is the DVD drive letter!
now type:

bootsect /nt60 c:

where c: is you primary hdd
