Post subject: Left-hand Shift key in keyboard

I notice that this key has two types: same size of other keys or equivalent
to two keys in one. The latter one is more popular while the former one is
often in the UK. Can someone advise why there are two types of this key.

It is because the UK keyboard has an extra special character key on the
bottom row to the left of the "Z" key then the US Keyboard, so it has only
half the space available for the left shift key.
