can't get into safemode or anything. I get the following message:
The following file is missing windows root\system32\hal.dll

I don't have a disk for this and tried using a recuse disk one of my friends
give me , but it did not work. I have the liceience key etc and its a legal
copy and I am running windows xp media center edition 2005.

Can anyone please help me.

Your Advent computer uses the latest recovery system that doesn't require
any CDs or DVDs to restore your PC to it's original factory condition.

There are two ways to start the recovery -
Restart your computer. Then Press F10 repeatedly until the message "Starting
System Recovery" is displayed.
In Windows by clicking: Start / All Programs / System Recovery / System
Recovery.
The recovery will load and display a box with one option:
Non-destructive recovery: this option will restore Windows, supplied
applications, and drivers. This option will not destroy your documents or
programs. These will be backed up along with the registry. These are
restored at the end of the recovery process.
To access the recovery options below that erase all data from the computer,
click the Advanced button.
System Recovery - No format: this will reinstall Windows, supplied
applications and drivers. It will move your files to a folder called "My old
disk structure". Any applications (except those supplied) will need to be
reinstalled.
System Recovery - Quick format: this option will erase your hard drive
including your personal files. Windows, supplied applications and drivers
will be reinstalled.
Select the Non-destructive recovery option and press Next.
You will be informed about System Restore in Windows, click Yes.
The recovery will begin. Once this is complete click Restart.

I hope that helps you

Hi thanks for coming back to me and the advice you provided.

I have tried to do as you suggested and I keep getting the message:

windows cannot start because the following files is missing or corrupte.

windows root\system32\hal.dll

please reinstall a copy of the above file.

when I try and press F8 and get the options it first asked me which
operating system, either windows xp or windows media centre and i have tried
both and it just brings me back to the same message about the missing or
corrupt file. I have trie starting in safe mode , last known good
configeration and all the other options and it won't go beyond the error
message I have mentioned. Even when I press f10 repeatedly, it first ask
which system and which either one I choose I get the same message.

Do you have any other suggestions before I throw this computer out the window.

Thanks in advance.

Are you in the UK. If so, PC World are primary retailers for
Advent computers and might even have exclusive rights to the
brand.

Although I would normally be very reluctant to use their
after-sales service, it may be worth visiting the tech department
at your nearest PC World. They might have the necessary
installation disks.

you will have to borrow a
windows cd from someone
to boot with "or"

the other option is to maybe
make a bootable cd via the
internet.

the main problem is that
you can't access the disk
system at this time

however you need to access
the disk system via a bootable
cd in order to try and replace
that corrupted system file.

subsequently, once you are
at the disk prompt >:

you can copy the hal.dll
from :

\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

and then paste into the

windows\system32 folder

or you can find a working copy
of hal.dll on a windows cd
and paste it into the system32
folder on the hard drive.

moreover while you are at
the disk system for the above

I would also run the commands >:

fixboot
fixmbr
chkdsk /p

then exit, remove cd and
hope you can boot normally
again..

unfortunately, if however, you can
not obtain a bootable disk, then you
may want to purchase a new operating
system from the store or online

or look up the model number for
your laptop at its maker's website
for instructions or faq's on how
to restore the machine back to
its factory state.

there is yet one more option
but may be impossible for you
to do.

you can take that hard disk out
of the machine and install it as
a slave on a functional machine.

then by using the functional
machine you can locate and
copy the hal.dll file onto the
dysfunctional disk.

lastly, you may want to look
up via google or bing on
issues pertaining to "hal.dll"
