Hello,

I have a Dell laptop, the internal mouse has stopped working as well as
the plug in mouse. The curser shows and moves but there is no response when I
try to click on anything. There is a short period of time when I can use it,
that is before it has finished loading all the programs when it's first
booted up. I have no clue as to how to begin to fix this without access to a
mouse. Any and all help I would be so grateful for.

Many thanks!

It might work in Safe Mode, since you say it works for a short time
during startup.. I suspect malware, but some unique software could be to
blame.

You can do most things without the mouse, using these keys:

Alt, Tab, cursor keys, spacebar, and Enter key.

I would buy an external USB mouse (they cost very little!) and use it to
examine the many settings you will find under the Mouse applet in the
Control Panel. You could even use a PS/2 mouse if your laptop has a PS/2
connector.

Boot your PC into safe mode, usually by pressing F8 constantly during the
boot process, does it now work?

I have same problem. Now I switched left side to right side (it was
funcional) and I can double click. Left side of the internal mouse is
still death. I tied all suggestions mentioned above but did not work.
Any other idea?
