Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

Last night I installed IE8 (no problems) while I was running XP SP2. I then
discovered that SP2 support is done next month so I decided to install SP3.
No matter what I do I cannot get it to install. I keep getting the error
"Access Denied." I've tried literally every suggestion Microsoft offers on
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377. Now I'm wondering if IE8 is the
issue. In other words, can you even install SP3 after you install IE8? Any
suggestions would be most welcome as I'm at a loss of what to do.

Thanks.

Brian

You can install SP3 after installing IE 8, but it is better to do it the
other way round, because if you install SP3 after installing IE8 you will
not be able to roll back IE8 to the previous version you had, should you
want to.
So my suggestion is to uninstall IE8 from add/remove (which will roll you
back to the previous version of IE you had).

You say you get access denied: when, and access to what exactly? are you
logged in to an account with full admin rights?

As for installing SP3, in my experience it is better to not to let Windows
update do it. Instead download and save to your hard drive the complete SP3
package (or you can order a CD, I think). Then install manually. Before
doing so make sure your computer is free of any malware or virus, and also
see Steps to take before installing SP3:

SP3 download from:

Hi Brian,

What version of XP are you running? Have you downloaded the Full Version
of Service Pack 3 or installing from the Updates from Microsoft?

Do you have Anti-Virus installed? Have you disabled it?

I finally got it to work by uninstalling IE8 and then installing SP3 first.
I did download the full version as recommended by a Microsoft Knowledgeable
article, I disabled my anti-virus software along with anti everything else
and I also turned off my third party firewall and turned on Microsoft's
during the install process. Concerning the "Access Denied" error, that's all
the info the message gave! I did a ton of research on this and basically
Microsoft says that certain entries in the registry cannot be changed for
some reason. In one article they say some programs make changes to the
registry that you cannot change even with admin rights. Anyway, everything
appears to be running now and hopefully SP3 won't create problems with other
programs I have.
