My father just received a Dell Inspiron 530 with Ubuntu installed as the
OS. He asked me to install Vista Home Premium 32bit w/ SP1 on the system
(a clean installation), but I am having significant trouble installing
it. The disc does not autorun and for some reason the system will not
run setup.exe. Any ideas? Thanks.

You need to use a full retail version of Vista since your father didn't
order Vista from Dell.

Boot with the Vista DVD and do a clean install. If you press F12 when you
start the computer you'll be able to choose booting from the optical drive
first.

Make sure you download all the Vista drivers from Dell's site for the
Inspiron 530 and have them on a USB key or burned to CD first.

Don't take this the wrong way but you may be getting in over your head, you
can't expect a Windows based executable on a Vista DVD to start and run on a
Linux OS. I would recommend finding a good local shop to do the necessary
work, as getting Vista installed is only part of what needs to be done,
partitions need to be deleted and created, Vista needs to be installed,
drivers for the hardware must also be located and installed.
See this site if you want to try tackling the job.

CTP,

You will need to boot to the Vista disc instead of auto-running. Delete
the partiton where Ubuntu is installed.Re-create another partition to
install Vista. Dowload Vista drivers for your hardware from the link
below.
