Post subject: Installing or Removing Windows Components
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>perform_maintain (more info?)

When I install a missing Windows component, it seems like it removes
something else that I need (even if that box is not checked). For instance, I
reinstalled the fax services and now my volume control is missing. When I
click on "Place volume icon in the taskbar," I get the following message:
Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the volume
control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel. I assumed they meant Add/Remove Windows Components
too, so I clicked on that, but there is no volume control in the list. Any
help is appreciated. Thank you.
