I have tried unsuccessfully to install two different 1 TB hard drives -- a
Samsung and a Western Digital; and each time I could not get my system to
"see" the drive. Instead, my system reports a 32mb drive. I have a fairly
new system with Windows Vista factory-loaded on it. My goal is to reinstall
Vista onto the new drive. When I attempt to install Vista, the Vista
install program likewise reports that the new drive is only 32mb. Can
anyone steer me in the right direction? Could it be a BIOS problem?

Put the Samsung and a Western Digital software in the A: Drive and start
your PC. the software will give you help. If you do not have a A: Drive Buy
one!!!!!

For the Western Digital 1TB drive --

The BIOS says:

Cylinders 65535
Heads 16
PreComp 0
Landing Zone 65534
Sectors 255

IBM's Ontack says the settings should be;

Cylinders 16383
Heads 16
PreComp 16384
Landing Zone 16384
Sectors 63

When you say the "A: drive" do you mean a floppy drive, which I already
have? The Western Digital software is much larger than the capacity of a
floppy. I am able to boot from the Western digital CD, but that didn't work
either.

A work around that has worked for me was to format the brand new 1TB hdd
on another computer running windows. I had to connect the brand new one
as a secondary hard drive on a working system first, then open up disk
management and format the new hdd using NTFS file system. After it had
been formatted, I connected it back to the computer where I was setting
it up as the primary hdd, and voila! Windows finally successfully
installed, and without hitches! I think the 1TB disk space is too big
for the dvd media to handle as far as formatting is concerned, so you
have to help it out by using a formatted hdd in order for the
installation disc to proceed with the simpler tasks of copying,
expanding, and installing the windows files. I am not sure it makes any
sense to you, but I got it working that way, and I am hoping you will,
too.

If the motherboard uses an nvidia chipset it may be a driver issue.

I have several 1.5TB seagate drives that would not work with an evga 750i
motherboard. Recently they came out with a new version of the chipset
driver. Lo and behold, now the drives work perfectly.
