Hi,
On a customer's system the second "cpu"does not show although:
+ CPU supports hyperthreading,
+ BIOS has hyperthreading enabled
+ ACPI 2.0 enabled.
+ Windows "ACPI multiprocesor-pc" CPU device driver manualy selected.
+ New hardware detected, 2x reboot.
But in Device Manager still 1 processor listed.
In Task Manager still 1 Performance Window.
How to fully enable hyperthreading ?
System description
P4 3GHz with hyperthreading.
2GB DDR400
WinXP Home + SP3
Office 2007
All updates
NOD32 A/V
RocketDock desktop enhancement
TIA,

Some Confusion - hyperthreading permits "one" processor to process more than
one thread concurrently (providing application is programmed to take
advantage).
Hyperthreading by itself does not indicate multiple cores or processors.

What you say is true but a hyperthreaded processor will show up as two
logical processors in the Device Manager.

Open task manager..performance tab..view button..and under cpu history be
sure 'one graph per cpu' is picked.

You manually installed a driver for "ACPI Multi".
Have you done the windows updates since, not the express ones, the
custom ones and then the optional hardware ones?
Have you also updated your BIOS to the most current version? >> Stay informed about: Hyperthreading CPU but 2nd ""CPU"" not shown |

To all,
Please stop this architecture discussion.
I am trying to get a new customer's PC fixed.
Technical details described in initial post.
Please read first.
Additions:
- Asus P4PE2-X bios 1004
- 2x 512MB DDR400 (checked OK)
- Maxtor 160GB HD
According CPU-Z
P4 Prescott 90nm
Fam/Model/Step : F / 4 / 1
xFam./xMod./Rev: F / 4 / E0
Core 3GHz
Mult. 15x
Bus 200MHz
FSB 800MHz
Thank you.
John7
PS: considering bios 1005 although it states no improvements on this.

Judging by what I see here, I like the sound of your BIOS upgrade theory.
There is a 1006.001 available on the download page.
http://support.asus.com.tw/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P4PE2-X
Also, read the warnings for each BIOS in the BIOS list.

Good luck,

Install the chipset drivers and update the processor drivers.

Open a command prompt and type:
set NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS
If this shows 2, then HT is working

Thanks Pavel,
As I expected:
NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS = 1
Another proof that HT is not working.
Still puzzled,

Then - try a *clean* XP install form a *generic* disk (or, to save time,
some Linux "live cd" that supports multiple CPUs).
If all these won't see both CPUs, then you have a BIOS or hardware problem.
In some cases, update over uniprocessor XP installation won't update kernel
to multiprocessor.

To all,
Thank you all for your help.
A BIOS update to v1005 did the trick.
Release notes do not mention this bug fix.
