A friend's IT literate relative has changed his email client from Outlook
Express to Outlook. He and I don't know why. He is a novice user and
seemed to manage OK with Outlook Express. What are the disadvantages or
advantages of Outlook against Outlook Express as a novice home users' email
client?

Thanks

One advantage:

Outlook, like Mozilla Thunderbird, has an option to filter any email
where the sender is not in your address book. With this feature alone,
you can send all other correspondence to a special folder for close
scrutiny before opening.

For a complete comparison of the differences, you'll probably need to
post to an Outlook group, or do a search for a comparison site.

Ah, here's one, from a quick Google search:

One advantage of Outlook is the ability to export your Inbox and other
folders to a .csv file. It is a practical way to backup your email messages
easily.

For a novice user, I would not recommend Outlook over Outlook Express, as the novice
user will have no need for most of the business-oriented features of Outlook. I
would normally recommend either Outlook Express of the free third-party email client
Mozilla Thunderbird, for novice and even intermediate users. I personally have no
need for Outlook, and do not care for it. YMMV.

Note that Outlook is NOT free. It is part of the Microsoft Office Suite, and may
also be bought standalone for over $100US. Does your friend have Office installed
on his system?

Switching back to Outlook Express is simple enough, by clicking the Start button>
Control Panel> Internet Options> Programs tab, and in the drop-down lists for Email
and for News, select Outlook Express, then click Apply/OK.

Outlook express says I have over 80 messages to download but I really only
have about 15 messages. How do I clear this up so I can download without it
thinking I have so many messages.
