I am in XP using WORD 2007. my work involves adding footnotes to documents.
It is all straightforward except that in web pages the note does not go all
across the page : it stops half way. Will someone please remind me how to use
the full widthof the page? tThank you. db

Show nonprinting marks by pressing Ctrl+Shift+8, and then delete any
undesired line breaks or paragraph marks (¶) in the footnote text.

Thank you Stefan Blom. The Paragraph marks would only move across the page.
They could not be removed. Are there any other approaches? db

Try to describe how the page looks when you display nonprinting marks. If
you see something like this:

1 Footnote text here¶
which continues here¶
and also here¶

2 Text of second footnote¶
is found here

you should be able to delete the first two paragraph marks (¶) of the first
footnote (and the first paragraph mark of the second footnote).

Sometimes you must use BackSpace rather than Delete to get rid of paragraph
marks within a footnote.

Also note that you must be in Print Layout view in order to edit footnote
text in Word. Alternatively, make use of the footnotes pane in Normal
(Draft), Outline or Web Layout view.

Thank you but I thought you had given up on me! I get the paragraph marks ypu
show in example 1. It doesnt matter whether I'm in Draft, print layout or any
of them. The paragraph mark in footnotes will blue over but there is no way
that "Delete" or "backspace" works on any paragraph mark in footnotes in the
document - "this is not a valid action" comes up. In the body of the document
backspace does work on intermediate marks taking out the mark, plus a whole
space and sending the work up a line. But the last mark won't delete and
this of course is not in Footnotes in any case. I am grateful for your
attention. db

Each footnote must contain at least one paragraph mark; you cannot delete
the one separating a footnote from the following footnote (in the footnote
area).

If you want the footnotes to look as if they are all in one paragraph, you
can format the paragraph marks as hidden, but note that this won't conserve
any space on the page (Words allocates vertical space for each footnote
anyway).

Thank you again. I think we have lost some common objective. I really want
my footnotes in a web page to appear all across the page - taking up the full
width of the ruler to ruler mark 33, and not stop half way at ruler mark 16.
In your last note you talk about vertical space being allocated by Word. It
is that space I wish to enlarge to the right hand border of my screen. I hope
this is clearer. Last year, I think, on another Word program, I had the
same problem and either you or Miss Barnhill gave me an answer which worked.
I've forgotten what was said! But it should be in the archive somewhere! I
did think it was to do with windows or panes, maybe not...
Kind regards , db

Follow-up: I received an example document from the OP, and it turned out to
be a display issue in Word. I'm repeating my answer here as it might be
helpful to someone else:

The footnote text should wrap to the document window (in Web Layout,
Outline, and Draft views), assuming that you select that option in Word
Options. In Word 2007, click the Office button, and then click Word Options.
In the Advanced category, locate the "Show document content" heading, and
click to select the "Show text wrapped within the document window" option.
Click OK to close the dialog box.
