Yesterday (Wednesday 25 Nov 09) as part of regular maintenance, I defraged my
computer and received an unusual inclusion in the end report "Files that
cannot be defragmented." Below is the list:
Fragments File Size Files that cannot be defragmented
8 31 KB \Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\avg8\Log\avgui.log
25 174 KB \Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\avg8\Log\avgsched.log
10 325 KB \Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\avg8\Log\avgns.log
84 655 KB \Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\avg8\Log\avgcore.log
39 653 KB \Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\avg8\Log\avgwd.log
31 949 KB \Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\avg8\Log\avgrs.log
I don't ever remember seeing this in the defragging end report before. Just
prior to defragging, an automatic download came in from Microsoft. Did these
files that cannot be defragged come in from the latest Microsoft download?
Would appreciate learning what is occuring. >> Stay informed about: Files that cannot be defragged |

You're using AVG. Those files are inuse and probably have a lock on them. >> Stay informed about: Files that cannot be defragged |

to do a defrag it is best to do just before turning off
stop all programs and any sitting on quick launch area around clock like avg
possibly do a file cleanup to dump temp files
after defrag reboot or shutdown

Reading the AVG forums, they seem to acknowledge this extra new
feature in their 9.0 version, but your path statements indicate avg8,
but maybe some AVG upgrade has occurred lately on your system?
Did it used to work before any AVG upgrade?
Maybe check out their forums where there is some other recent activity
that sounds like yours:

Many thanks to all of you who commented on my post. Special gratitude for
tracing the source to the AVG program - it seems obvious now just by looking
at the file name. Have not had to disable AVG before but will do so now.
Recently I downloaded an upgrade from AVG8 to AVG9 - that change probably
contributes to the files that won't defrag...
My routine for defragging (done about once every two weeks just before
shutting down) has been to religiously run Disc Cleanup and then the Disc
Defrag program.

You might ask yourself "why?" Defragging an NTFS disk has no detectable
effect on efficiency. >> Stay informed about: Files that cannot be defragged |

Would you agree or disagree with the following statements:
The NTFS file system is not immune to fragmentation but it is designed
to prevent fragmentation.
The NTFS file system is designed to find file fragments more
efficiently, but no matter what the file system, any excess disk head
motion will result in a loss of system performance. >> Stay informed about: Files that cannot be defragged |
