Post subject: Dual Layer DVD Writing?

(Running Vista Ultimate 64-bit, SP-2, IE-8, WM-6, WLM-09,
classic mode, dial-up.)
Is there an easy way to decipher the device descriptors to
tell if a DVD reader/writer works with dual-layer DVDs? My
(HP) system is about 3 years old, and I can find nothing in
any of the (skimpy) paperwork that came with it to disclose
such information. The front of the drive says "Compact Disc
ReWritable", "Ultra Speed", "+", "LightScribe", "DVD Multi
Recorder", "R DL", "RW", and "DVD+R DL"
I'm hoping that in the codes "R DL" and "DVD+R DL" the DL
means dual layer, but I'd like to confirm that before I
purchase some of the more expensive dual-layer DVD disks.

"DVD+R DL" means dual layer burning. You could go to HP's website and if
they operate anything like Dell you can enter a serial number that's
somewhere on the case and it'll bring up exactly what your system was
originally equipped with. |

Locate, download and run Nero's Infotool. It should list out the
compatible media formats that your drive(s) can handle. >> Stay informed about: Dual Layer DVD Writing? |

Thanks. Located the website, and it appears only to be
available for OSs up through XP, but not Vista or W-7.

Thanks. I looked. HP has something called a "device
detector" (I think I'm remembering the term correctly.) I
used it, but instead of telling me what my specific computer
has, it told me what the options I had when I originally
purchased it. For example, I originally had my choice of 4
different CD/DVD reader/writers, but it didn't tell me which
one I actually ordered and is currently installed.
I bought 5 re-writeable disks, and my system seems to handle
them properly. I also bought 5 double layer disks, but I
have not yet tried them.

No problem. As long as the burner has DL inscribed it can burn Dual Layer
