I have inadvertantly managed to double the size of the task bar at the bottom
of the screen and try as I might (and I have tried everything I can think of
) it will not go back to the normal width. Any solution would be most
gratefully received

What happens is that the end "margin" of the QuickLaunch toolbar has gotten
so far over to the right that it is now down below. Unlock the Taskbar and
then "grab" the dotted line on the bottom bar (it will be a solid line if
you are using the classic style) and drag it up to immediately to the right
of the QuickLaunch icons. Now you've successfully made the QuickLaunch
toolbar shorter and can "grab" the top bar of the Taskbar and "push" it
down to the regular one-tier height.

I assume you mean the height and not the width which in the MS world is
generally full screen.

Right click the task bar, unmark lock and grab a hold of the top edge to
shift it.

Why? It just describes a basic move that the OP had almost certainly already
tried - and OP got the issue fixed thanks to Malke's response on the same
day over two weeks ago! I only looked at the site in case it had useful info
on the taskbar, but all that page says is: unlock it, drag top edge down,
lock it.

desktop background - i am have a really rough time changing the background on my desktop. i have been through tons on things to try to fix it but to no luck. when i go to themes it canges everything but my backgroung and when i click on the display tab everything is graye...
