Blank DVD's not recognised

Do you have DVD burning software installed? Windows XP can read DVD's
but doesn't have the ability to burn them out of the box. You need to
have something like Nero or some other software installed to give you
the ability to burn DVD's. If your DVD burner came with your PC, then
it's possible that the pc manufacturer may have installed a demo version
of some DVD authoring software. If you've added the DVD burner, it's
possible that the drive manufacturer may have provided authoring
software as well. If so, then it's very likely that the software will
be an older version or a demo with limited capabilities.

Been using Nero for years without any problems.

You have to set Nero to a DVD. By default it is set for a CD

I no longer use Nero but have burned a million
CD/DVDs. My major burner is Iomega,'s Hot Burn so
wonder what the difference is that would cause Nero to
be any different.

I wonder if it's a case of the test saying "CD" but looking at the space
possibilities for the "CD" don't include the sizes for a DVD. I've seen
that happen before but can't recall where for sure; Roxio maybe.

I've googled the problem and it seems that I am not alone. Lots of people
saying they have the same problem but I can't find a solution although I did
read that possibly disabling Microsoft CD burner could be the answer. Could
you tell me how to do that and I assume that would make Nero (in my case)
the default burner.

Personally I don't know how to do that but others probably do. That
said, it shouldn't be necessary. If you install Nero and run a Nero
executable, that is all that should run. I only have fleeting
experience with Nero in that my sister uses it, but we had no problems
with it on her XP Home. And I've had no such problems with my own burner
programs, etc, but they are Ulead and other such companies products so
maybe not relevant at all.

Did you recently start using a new spindle of blank DVDs? Change
brands?

I had the exact same problem a few months ago. Just cracked open a new
100-pack of Memorex DVD-Rs. Got them on a good sale at Office Max.
Been using the same brand reliably for YEARS. Computer refused to
recognize it as a DVD. Tried several different discs from various
places in the spindle - same thing.

Store I bought them at didn't want to take them back because the
package was open. Had to drive 9 miles to find another store with a
more reasonable manager.

Bought some HP-branded discs, to go with my HP-branded burner, back in
business.

But did you just start using a new batch of the same brand? I had been
using Memorex for years, but the drive wouldn't recognize a new bunch
of them as DVDs. It's possible that Memorex may have started buying
their discs from another manufacturer.

If you have recently opened a new batch, search for one of those DVD
utilities that reads the preprogrammed data on the disc, and see if
it's the same on your old and new discs.

Nope. Been using Infiniti for years now. I don't have a problem burning
using Nero software, never have. When I double click "My Computer" my F
drive is given as"DVD-RW Drive". As soon as I load a blank DVD the drive
changes to "CD Drive" . If I right click and select "AutoPlay" it says it is
a blank CD and there are the usual options for burning CDs. If I load a pre
recorded DVD it plays it OK. I can work around this by deselecting Autoplay
and opening Nero separately, but it is a bit of an annoyance.
