I have Vista Home Basic (don't flame i got it for free =P)
I go to log on a couple days ago and I get nothing but a black screen
with no icons or taskbar. I can still open my task manager through
ctrl-alt-del and it says explorer and all my other programs are running,
but I can't access any of it b/c it won't let me open anything. So I
restart enter safe mode and do a system restore and get all my stuff to
show up, but today I logged in and the same thing happened; all i had to
do was restart and log back in this time.

Any idea what's going on? It's not a big deal b/c it only happens every
couple days, but I want my machine in good health and if I can fix it I
will.

Thanks in advance.

Nothing wrong with Home Basic. Smile If the video card has dual outputs the
desktop may have flipped over to the secondary display for whatever reason.
Try installing updated drivers from the graphics card manufacturer (the
reinstallation is the point of the exercise, not the driver version). If the
problem persists you might have a hardware issue.

mine was set to extend the desktop onto screen 2
as soon as i disabled that, i never got the problem again

bow i just have the 2nd screen set to clone so that both screens display the
information

mine is only a computer, 2nd display is the tv so i can watch movies etc

I just found out it is a problem with explorer.exe. I shut it down
through the task manager and restarted it manually and everything was
fine.

How would I go about repairing explorer.exe?

have you got 2 monitors or 1 monitor and a tv set up as extended desktops
try separating them if so and see if that changes anything

if not try getting the latest graphics drivers
