OK. Maybe it's native to some of my applications (e.g. Editpad, winedt).
When I click on file, Open, I get a window that says "open" or "open
file". It is split in two, with a left column that lists vertically some
folder icons (desktop, computer, networks, ...). The right column and
main part of the window lists the content of a folder. I was wondering
if there was a way to add an icon in the left column to point to a
specific folder, without having to navigate.

I think you click on the Tools in the bottom R/H corner.
However, that type of "Open" box is not used on Vista.

I believe the OP is referring to the navigation pane... it definitely
is used "on" Vista.

Hi Daniel,

If you're referring to the "favorite links" section of Windows Explorer,
then no, that's not customizable (though I would like it to be). Instead,
all you can do is expand the lower "folders" section to get the entire
directory tree.

The navigation pane shows all folders in the tree, so I don't then
understand what the OP is referring to, unless he is referring to the old
style "XP" type "Open" dialog...

It's customizable here - I can add and remove links....

I guess this is a leftover from Xp!

Wow, what was I thinking....Yes, you are correct. It is customizable, you
can simply drag and drop folders into that section.

I think for some reason I was thinking about the layout of the navigation
pane itself and whether or not you could remove that section and not the
folder tree.
