Vista SP1. Access 2003 SR3.

When I run Access 2003 on a system with Vista, I notice that when I add or
modify records in tables, that the mdb file "date modified" does not get
updated. More seriously, when I copy the mdb file to another location on the
computer or to a CD or thumb drive, the latest changes to the tables are not
there. They show in the original mdb, but the copy does not have the
changes! This is a split database with front end and back end. It is the
backend I am most concerned with here. Any idea of why this is happening.
Is this a known issue?

If the updated records exist then a copy of the file would contain those
records.
Sounds like you are coping the wrong end. Check the opposite end of your
setup.

Two things 41 years of troubleshooting have taught me:

- When it doesn't make sense, question my assumptions
- Question the simple stuff

With the above in mind, my first guess is that the file that you are looking
at (thinking is the back end) isn't the actual back end file....maybe a copy
or something.

- - - - -

I've seen numerous Windows false-intelligence "features" (DEFECTS) which
can cause such confusion such as ailiasing, changing shortcut targets etc.
automatically when you move files., etc. so it can happen to anyone.

Don't know about Vista specifically, as we upgraded all but 1 of our few
Vista machines to XP.

Karl:

I select the backend (grading_be.mdb) open it and see the updated
information. With the same file selected (grading_be.mdb) I copy and paste
the file. When I open the copy, the new record or record updates are not
there. I am certain that I am using the same file. The fact that when I
update or add records that the "Modified" date on the grading_be.mdb is not
updated is telling. Yet I can go into the file and see the updates, but any
copy does not include the updates.

Doug,

In essence you are saying that merely copying the file removes the new data,
removes new records, and finds and recovers all of your deleted and
overwritten data and records (back from who knows where) and puts the deleted
and overwritten data back into your database in all of the right places.
That's like impossible....again I would recommend rechecking your
observations/ assumptions.

Fred:

I did not say all of that. The backend database appears as it did before
the records were inserted or updated. There are no deleted records now
showing, etc. Simply the new stuff missing. However, I will examine my
assumptions. I assure you though that after my 30 years of programming I do
make mistakes, but ain't no dummy either.

When it comes to the immediate problem that we can't solve, we're all
dummies. Once the problem is understood and solved we're geniuses
again.

The most common issues that arise in the manipulation and management
of split Access applications during development are those to do with
the proper synchronizing of *each* FrontEnd with its respective
BackEnd. Specify the path name of each component. Be unambiguous
about referring to each part. Try something like FE1 and BE1 and FE2
and BE2

It would be helpful if you were to specify what happened with each of
the parts of both copies of your applications. If you do that, you
might discover and resolve the problem and solution on your own.

Since I can't see your computer, I don't really grasp what the
symptoms actually are. I speculate that something like this went on:
You split your application using the provided tool or from advice
garnered here. Once you verified that the original application worked
it its new configuration, you copied it into a new folder or renamed
the FE and BE and left it in the same folder with the original.

However, you didn't mention if you want the new application to operate
as a completely different application from the original or simply as a
new FE that happened to be located elsewhere or named something else.
My guess is that you are trying to create something that you can dress
up and then give to others.

If the latter just above is what you want then in FE2;;
Tools/AddIns/Linked Table Manager and check the box that says "Always
ask me" & click OK. When the new dialog box opens for the first
table, navigate to that table in BE2 and click OK. That should find
all of the tables. Without clicking "Ask Me", click OK and you're
done.

Now, entering data into the forms in FE2 will cause that data to
appear in BE2. Each session will cause the date on BE2 to change.

FWIW I have an application that I created back in the mid '90s. It's
really handy for tracking project elements. When I start a new
project, I create and re-name a new copy of the app for the new
project. Probably one time in ten, I forget to re-link the tables
until after I've emptied the tables of the last project's data and
began tracking the new project. Fortunately I have an automatic
backup for my Access files. Smile

Hello Doug,

Sorry if I was short in my post. I was just saying what I felt logically
follows from your statement in an effort to help. For example, if you edit
a field overwriting old text with new text. You said that if you look at the
BE, you see the changes (e.g. the new text.) Then you said that if you copy
the BE and look at the copy, the changes are not there. That would mean
that the copying process "recreated" the old text.

We recently had a problem that was similar in a few ways to yours, except on
an unsplit DB launched from a shortcut. Let's say c:\DBs\MyDB.mdb. Then we
copied the db, made some changes, moved the old copy into c:\Dump\, and put
the new copy in it's place.

Then, although the newly entered data "took" from the user's standpoint, it
"wasn't showing up any (backup) copies made of the database,
c:\DBs\MyDB.mdb". It's only when we questioned our observation (the
statement in quotes) and realized that it was wrong that we found and fixed
the problem. When the file was moved, the false-intelligence in Windows
automatically changed the target of the shortcut to the new location, after
which c:\Dump\MyDB.mdb, became the actual database in use. So, I never view
questioning/dissection of assumptions/observations as questioning of
expertise......sorry if my short wording was not so good and may have sounded
otherwise.

As the others have suggested I suspect you are looking at the wrong
backend MDB. Go to the linked tables in the FE and hover over the
table name. You should see a tooltip pop up with the full path and
name of the current BE MDB.
