Perhaps not relevant to this group but I don't know where else to go for
some help!! Neither the ASUS nor the VM Device (who manufactured Splashtop)
website are of much help!!

Just installed new ASUS mobo and it comes with the above which I would like
to use but in the config panel for Splashtop it doesn't show my wireless
network so won't connect to the Web. It may be because my mobo doesn't have
wireless link built in but relies on a BT wireless adapter. Can anyone
confirm whether that is the problem? Many thanks

If you don't have a wireless network adapter installed your not going to
connect to a wireless network

To connect wirelessly, the computer must have:

a) its own wireless network card (inside the computer casing)
or

b) a USB wireless dongle (installed with the correct drivers)

Yep - I know that and have said that I have a BT wireless dongle. Don't have
any probs connecting to Internet whilst WinXP loaded so the wireless bit
works fine. Just wonder whether it's the dongle causing a prob or if perhaps
my security sofware prevents splashtop from connecting. In theory I could
allow the security software to ignore splashtop.exe but I can't find it in
any WinXP folder so think it is built into BIOS.

Any other ideas?
Thanks

What Firewall are you using?

If your Firewall monitors outgoing Internet access, you might
need to configure the program to permit Internet access for
splashtop.exe.

Bob,

I'm using a McAfee software which is tailored to British Telecom Broadband
and the problem is that it needs to identify the file from the WinXP folder
list. The file is not in the folder list - I think it's built into the
BIOS!
Splashtop loads within 5 seconds of turning on the computer - WinXP is not
loaded so is there actually a firewall present? I think we need someone who
knows how splashtop works to solve this one?

Regards,

John

John,

You are right - Splashtop works with a 512MB flash memory embedded on the
Asus motherboard. A core engine starts at the BIOS boot and loads a
specialized Linux distribution called a "Virtual Appliance Environment"
(VAE). While running this VAE, the user can launch "Virtual Appliances"
(VA). Skype is a VA, for instance.

It is possible that the wireless feature is not included in this Linux
distribution that makes up the BIOS OS bootup. Have you tried it with a hard
wired ethernet link?

Unfortunately I do not know enough about it to be more forthcoming.

You said that the Asus website was of no help, but have you tried the forums
there? Dependant on the motherboard you have, there are some knowledgeable
people there.

Start with the following link:
http://vip.asus.com/forum/topic.aspx?board_id=1&SLanguage=en-us and select
the appropriate motherboard from the dropdown box in the top right of the
page.

If you make a post, also use the term "Express Gate" as Splashtop was
rebranded as "Express Gate" on Asus boards (as you are probably aware).

Hope this helps.

Martin

Martin,

Many thanks for the link which I couldn't find previously. Have put a query
on there so will keep my fingers crossed that someone can help. Thanks for
your interest,
